A slap hit his back. “What’s wrong, pretty boy?” the patron to his left asked with a wild cackle.
Lost in the crimson swill, the lamenting elf remained silent as he rolled the glass orb between his fingers.

He fingered the pommel of the razor sharp dagger tucked into his belt. Sometimes the only medicine for his depression was death. The keen blade struck like silver lightning, slicing the other patron’s throat; he fell choking on blood. Chakal sighed. No, not even that seemed to work today.

Pain. He said it out loud, turned it around in his head, tried to spell it. Slate had suffered for so long, tortured by his very existence. Pain had become his friend, a companion for his troubles. Salvation whispered in his ear, promising great things. Pain told him the truth.
